Unlocking Value & Securing Futures
The organisation was formally established on 1 January 1974 when a number of smaller local dairy co-operatives in County Kerry amalgamated and collectively purchased the assets of the state-owned Dairy Disposal Board to form a unified dairy co-operative structure.
Origins and Formation
When Kerry Co-Op commenced trading in 1974, it consolidated the operations of eight independent dairy farm co-operatives and the Dairy Disposal Board’s Kerry assets. The unification under the co-operative model created a more efficient dairy production and processing organisation, giving local farmers collective control over production, marketing and investment decisions.
Growth and Diversification
A major milestone in the organisation’s history was its role in the creation and subsequent evolution of Kerry Group plc. Originally part of the co-operative’s dairy processing activities, Kerry Group emerged from these roots and ultimately became a publicly traded global food ingredient and nutrition business. During the mid-1980s, Kerry Group was listed on the Dublin and London Stock Exchanges, with many of the co-operative’s founding members benefiting from the listing through share ownership.
Strategic Structure and Investments
In late 2024, Kerry Co-operative Creameries agreed a major transaction with Kerry Group under which the co-operative began acquiring the dairy business formerly known as Kerry Dairy Ireland — the consumer dairy and dairy ingredients division previously owned by Kerry Group plc. The first phase of this transaction, concluded on 31 December 2024, saw the co-operative acquire a majority (70 %) stake in Kerry Dairy Ireland, marking a strategic move to bring the dairying operations more directly under co-operative ownership.
The deal is structured to be completed in phases, with the co-operative having the option to purchase the remaining interest over time.
The other significant change as a result of this joint venture was the spin out of the Kerry Co-op shares with all Kerry Co-op shareholders having 85% of their co-op shares converted into Kerry Group plc shares and returned to the shareholders individually. Kerry Co-op sold the remaining 15% of the plc shares and used the monies to purchase the 70% stake in the Kerry Dairy Ireland business. The significance of this cannot be underestimated and as a result, for the first time since Kerry Group was incorporated in 1986, Kerry Co-operative Creameries Ltd. is no longer a shareholder.
This transition underscores the co-operative’s ongoing commitment to serving the interests of its farmer-members by directly managing and investing in core dairy processing activities — a significant development in the organisations over 50-year history.
